A Legacy of Girl Scout Support at Woodrow Wilson House

Edith Wilson became the first Honorary President of the Girl Scouts in 1917 when the organization was only five years old. Mrs. Wilson’s leadership of the Girl Scouts while she was First Lady brought national attention to its programming, which helped create the foundation for the internationally recognized organization it is today. Edith Wilson was presented with the “Thanks Badge” to the left made by the famous jeweler, Cartier, on behalf of the Girl Scouts. The badge was given in appreciation for the First Lady's support and encouragement for this stalwart non-profit organization that supports young women to this day. Mrs. Wilson then gifted this badge to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace in 1958 (where it still remains), in honor of Low's role as the founder of the Girl Scouts. All First Ladies from Edith Wilson to the present have served as Honorary President of the Girl Scouts. The Wilson House continues to value Mrs. Wilson’s precedent-setting relationship with the Girl Scouts today by hosting programming centered on Girl Scouts earning their badges at different levels.
