Who can apply for the Woodrow Wilson House Volunteer Scholars Program?
High school students, college and postdoc students interested in historic houses, museum studies, history, communications, social media, politics, African American history, women’s studies, presidential homes, museum collections, life 100 years ago, historic Washington, D.C., architecture, and more. We have scholar cohorts starting each spring, summer, and fall. Each semester we welcome new students, however, we recommend that students join the Woodrow Wilson House for a full school year in order to benefit from all that the program has to offer.

Why the Woodrow Wilson House Volunteer Scholars Program?
Scholars gain experience under the leadership of respected museum professionals in an educational setting at one of the nation’s premier historic house museums. They can also participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Washington Office, when available.

Scholars will have access to:

• Hands-on experience at a historic site
• The opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours for the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards and certificates
• An opportunity to produce meaningful work for a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
• A mentor
• Access to speakers and people in the industry
• The opportunity to teach or share experiences and skills
• The opportunity to present a culmination project to the greater National Trust and Wilson House audiences

What will I do as a Wilson House Volunteer Scholar?
Scholars can choose to be either virtual, on-site, or a combination of both. Depending on the scholar's academic interests, their location, and the needs of the museum, the scholar will have the opportunity to gain experience in:

• Collections management and cataloging, exhibits, and archival work
• Facilitating Historic House Tours
• Marketing and executing external and internal events
• House Management, gardening, and landscape projects
• Social media, marketing, and communications
• Fundraising and development

Is this position paid?
No, it is not a paid position, however, the Woodrow Wilson House is part of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards system and, as such, students can accumulate volunteer hours towards certificates and/or awards. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an opportunity to honor our most outstanding volunteers and recognize the impact they make.  Based on your age group category, volunteers can receive over a 12-month period a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Lifetime customized certificate and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
