The China Room
Monday, September 10, 2007
No decision was made regarding expansion of the Presidential china display until 1917, at which time President and Mrs. Wilson’s attentions were focused more towards the escalating war in Europe. If it had been just an issue of storage space for china, it is doubtful that Edith Wilson would have personally addressed the matter at all. But as the United States came closer to entry into World War I, patriotism was of even greater importance to the nation, and therefore the Presidential stage. President and Mrs. Wilson participated in numerous public events to first prepare the country for war, and then its unknown duration. American flags and eagles were the

Edith Wilson and the White House China Room
Monday, September 10, 2007
First lady Edith Bolling Wilson (1872-1961) was very much enamored with history and as first lady she recognized its importance to the official stage of the Presidency. A descendent of Pocahontas – the Indian princess who aided the settlers of Jamestown, Virginia – she was devoted to genealogy and the cherishing of ancestral possessions. Mrs. Wilson brought a personal affinity for history to the role of first lady, and it was demonstrated in a number of ways, most notably the sponsorship ninety years ago of the White House’s first true museum gallery, ‘the Presidential Collection Room’ – better known to us today as the China Room.

Wilson 150 The Exhibition
Saturday, June 03, 2006
The anniversary celebration kicks off with a new exhibition examining Wilson’s rich and complex legacy. On view from June 3 – November 12, 2006, WILSON 150:The Exhibition juxtaposes Wilson’s political achievements with his less familiar private life. Often perceived as a humorless schoolmaster, Wilson was in fact a passionate man who doted on his wife and three daughters. WILSON 150 chronicles both his public life in office as well as his private life at home through political memorabilia as well as other personal effects, such as his signature top hat, formal wear, and never-before-published photographic proofs. While the exhibition examines Wilson as a determined president, educator, world statesman and peacemaker, it also provides rare insight into his everyday pleasures and reveals a deeper understanding of his personal humanity.
